Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty, located on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, a universal symbol of freedom, inspiration. She stands as a beacon of hope to people from all walks of life. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. Lady Liberty was a gift from France to the United States to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. And the enduring friendship between the two nations.

The statue represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty.
The statue stands 151 feet tall from the base to the torch. But when including the pedestal and foundation, it reaches a total height of 305 feet.

The torch symbolizes enlightenment, lighting the path to freedom. The current torch, installed in 1986, is a replica as the original is now displayed in the Statue of Liberty Museum.
The statue’s crown has seven rays, representing the seven continents and seven seas, symbolizing universal liberty. Crown representing light with its spikes evoking sun rays extending out to the world.
The tablet in her left hand’s inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals.
The broken chain at her feet signifies the abolition of slavery and the breaking of tyranny.

The Statue of Liberty continues to be a powerful symbol of freedom and democracy. You can take a ferry to Liberty Island from Battery Park in New York City or from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The Statue of Liberty Museum, opened in 2019, provides historical context and displays artifacts related to the statue.
