Mount Washburn

Mount Washburn is one of the most popular day hiking destinations in Yellowstone, offering visitors breathtaking views and a memorable hiking experience. Situated in the northeastern region of the park, Mount Washburn stands at approximately 10,243 feet tall.

The most popular trail to the summit of Mount Washburn begins at the Dunraven Pass Trailhead, easily accessible by car from the Grand Loop Road. This well-maintained trail winds its way through subalpine forests and open meadows, offering hikers opportunities to observe wildlife such as bison, elk, and marmots along the way.

Bighorn sheep’re often seen along the slopes of Mount Washburn near Dunraven Pass. Be sure to keep between you and bighorn sheep. All bighorn sheep have horns. The rings on horns can be used to determine age.

The trail gradually becomes steeper, but it’s so wide, nice, and winds up the mountain. The effort’s rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. Including the Absaroka Range, Yellowstone Lake, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.

At the summit of Mount Washburn, hikers’re greeted with a fire lookout tower. Which offers unparalleled 360-degree views of the park. The fire tower was a nice end point as it offered a shelter, washrooms and even a telescope. It a prime spot for photography and wildlife observation!

This Mount is an excellent hike for visitors. But hikers should be prepared for changing weather conditions, including sudden storms and high winds, even in the summer months. In the fall months of September and October are the best time to hiking. Additionally, it’s important to carry plenty of water, sunscreen, and bear spray, as grizzly bears and other wildlife are present in the area.
