The Formation of Mammoth Hot Springs
Mammoth Hot Springs’s formed through the combined processes of geothermal heating, water circulation, dissolution of limestone, and deposition of travertine, resulting in the unique geological features that characterize the area.
The water originates from rain and snowfall on the nearby mountains. This water seeps deep into the earth. Where it’s heated by the geothermal activity occurring near a large magma chamber underground.
This thermal water then ascends towards the surface through a network of small fissures, fractures in the rock layers. These pathways create a plumbing system that allows the water to reach the surface as hot springs. Along its journey to the surface, the hot water interacts with gases, including carbon dioxide, which are released from the magma chamber. Some of the carbon dioxide dissolves in the hot water, forming a weak carbonic acid solution.
As the hot, acidic water moves through the rock layers, it encounters limestone deposits. The carbonic acid solution effectively dissolves the calcium carbonate present in the limestone.
Upon reaching the surface and being exposed to the air, the dissolved calcium carbonate undergoes a chemical reaction. This leads to the precipitation of solid mineral deposits, primarily composed of travertine. Over time, these mineral deposits accumulate, forming the distinctive terraces seen at Mammoth Hot Springs.
The Boardwalks at Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces
The boardwalks at Mammoth Hot Springs provide visitors with a safe and accessible way to explore the stunning terraces and geothermal features of the area. Mammoth Hot Springs boasts two distinct terrace boardwalks, known as the upper and lower terraces. Boardwalks cover about 1.75 miles around the Upper and Lower Terraces. These boardwalks wind through the thermal landscape, offering up-close views of the intricate formations of travertine terraces, colorful mineral deposits, and steaming hot springs.
Upper Terrace Boardwalk

The Lower Terrace Boardwalk
It Provides a closer look at the lower elevation of Mammoth Hot Springs. Accessible from both the parking lot and the Grand Loop Road.
Liberty Cap’s among the best known of the Lower Terrace’s key highlights. Rising impressively to a height of 37 feet, this distinctive hot spring cone has earned its name and renown since its discovery in 1871.
The origin of its name traces back to its striking resemblance to the peaked caps famously associated with the French Revolution. This unique geological formation owes its existence to centuries of uninterrupted flow within the hot spring’s plumbing system. The sustained activity and high internal pressure propelled the mineral-rich water to considerable heights, facilitating the gradual accumulation of mineral deposits.
Over time, these mineral deposits built up, sculpting the cone-shaped structure that we now know as Liberty Cap. Its imposing stature and historical significance make it a focal point for visitors exploring the Lower Terrace boardwalk.
