Godaido – The symbol of Matsushima

Are you eager to discover one of Matsushima‘s most exquisite tourist attractions? Look no further than Godaido – a destination you cannot afford to miss when exploring this wondrous land.

Godaido (五大堂, Godaidō), also known as “Godaiji Kondo.” It’s a small temple hall situated on a small island in Matsushima Bay with a red vermilion-lacquered bridge connecting it to the mainland. Godaido is a cultural and spiritual symbol of the region. This’s exemplified through the temple’s distinctive architecture. Built in traditional Japanese style, adorned with intricate motifs, and imbued with reverence for the spiritual realm.

Godaido’s originally built in 807 as Bishamondo. And when the priest Ennin installed images of the Five Wisdom Kings in 828, Bishamondo took its name Godaido. The temple opens its doors to the public these statues only once every 33 years. The next time’s scheduled for 2039.

Over the centuries, it has undergone several renovations. The present structure building is a 1604 reconstruction by the local feudal lord Masamune Date. The hall’s exterior’s decorated by meticulous carvings of the 12 animals of the lunar calendar, three on each side. Despite its exposed location, facing natural disasters, the Godaido did not suffer any major damage in the earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011. This temple has retained its spiritual significance and architectural splendor.

Godaido Temple’s designated an Important Cultural Property as Tohoku’s oldest building in the style of the Azuchi-Momoyama period.
